Onions

Notes from 2021: Mar 18 planted Yellow Onion sets at nine per square foot. They were susceptible to slug damage. July 13 harvested 103 onions that averaged one and a quarter inches in diameter. The onions that were in front of the tomatoes averaged two inches. I am not sure if this was from proximity to the tomatoes, the added shade, or extra water.

2024

Feb 1: Winter sowed Bunching Onions into 2-liter bottle. And direct sowed one square foot in the kitchen garden.

Feb 14: Planted Wala Wala, Early Yellow, and Large American Flag Leeks in seedling trays. I filled the trays with soil, generally spread seeds over the whole thing, and covered with a quarter inch of soil.

Mar 1: One a couple of the seeds sprouted so I moved them inside for a couple days to encourage germination. They liked that 🙂

Mar 19- The bunching onion seeds that were direct sown on Feb 1 are about one inch tall! The winter sown seeds are just about two inches tall, and I removed the top.

Mar 20- Purchased a 6 cell pack to make up for the seeds that didn’t sprout. It was $4-6.

Apr 29- Planted the store bought onions. I trimmed them down to 4-5” and trimmed the roots to about one inch (as recommended by The Reid Homestead). I mulched with about a half inch of compost. I got 19 starts from the 6 pack.

May 3- Planted a six cell flat of store bought Sweet Yellow onion starts. I got 30 starts out of it. I planted 4 rows about 4” apart.

May 22- Transplanted the Leeks, Yellow Onions, and Wala wala Onions into raised beds.

Aug 24- Harvested Sweet Wala Wala’s. The garden was fairly neglected this year and was only watered a couple times a month since the rains stopped. Some of them were harvested a bit prematurely, but others were hard to find because the tops had already fallen off. I never did plant the green onions that were winter sown. They never got big enough.
