Well folks, the time has come.
I can’t believe it’s finally happening!
I’m super excited – and also totally freaked out – because…
Last Saturday Cody spent the whole day dropping trees in the area where we plan to build our cabin!!
We invited our good friend Joel to come help us – although I think Cody more just helped him, because that dude was dropping trees left and right like a total pro! The two of them started cutting into things around 9:30 and by 2:00 they had all the trees and brush cut down in our homesite.
The kids and I had a blast watching them work (from a safe distance) and feeling the *THUD* under our feet when the big ones hit the ground.
There isn’t a ton to be written about felling trees in the woods, but here’s a bunch of pictures and some video of the day’s work!

Now that the fun part is over, we’ve invited some friends and family over for a work party in a couple of weeks to tackle cleaning up this mess! I know I’ve got at least one brother-in-law who can’t wait to get his axe out here and start splitting firewood! Just in time too, cause the woodshed is starting to look a little low (I can’t wait to have a high-efficiency rocket mass heater in the cabin!).
We’re also planning to rent a commercial-grade chipper for taking care of the branches and other bits that we don’t want to save for firewood. We go through TONS of wood chips for our paths, the garden beds, the chicken coop, and various other mulching applications, but by the time we’ve processed all this timber, I’m sure we’ll have enough wood chips to last us a good long while!
It’s all started to feel very surreal, now that we’ve so drasticly altered the landscape in our backyard. Maybe even a little bitter-sweet… I’m gonna miss the cozy “deep in the woods” feeling around the yurt now that there’s so much light and space around us.
But any negative feels are heartily overshadowed by the excitement of finally getting started on building our own house! A big change may be hard sometimes, but in this case it’s bringing us that much closer to the home we’ve been dreaming of for the last seven years!
I’ll try to get some more pictures uploaded to Instagram and Facebook here in the next couple of days, and maybe do a short YouTube video with more details on where we’re planning to build the cabin.
